Reading a plan is much more than recognising a drawing. This is about connecting information on the page to the work area, measurements, materials, tolerances and sequence of tasks.
CPCCCA3025 is a core unit within the CPC30220 Certificate III in Carpentry. It develops the skills and knowledge to interpret carpentry documentation to be able to plan and sequence work correctly.
Students learn to:
locate and check current plans, drawings and specifications;
interpret key features, legends, symbols and abbreviations;
check dimensions against specifications and the worksite;
orient plans to the site;
locate services, contours and datum points; and

Assessment requires candidates to read and interpret documentation for two carpentry projects of at least 30 square metres each and prepare a work plan identifying dimensions, material requirements and processes.
Reading plans only become worthwhile when applied to carpentry jobs. CPC30220 includes units for setting out, flooring systems, wall and ceiling frames, roof trusses, pitched roofs, eaves, windows and doors, external stairs, cladding, measurements, construction calculations and work health and safety.
For example, wall framing requires students to understand relevant dimensions and drawing details. Flooring work involves interpreting the size and layout of the space. Construction details and measurements are used in roofing operations as well.
This makes plan reading part of broader practical carpentry training.
A useful approach is to follow the same logical sequence reflected in formal carpentry training:
Check the document. Make sure the plans, specifications and drawings being used are current.
Identify the plan type. Determine whether it is a site plan, floor plan, elevation, section or detailed drawing.
Read legends and notes. Identify symbols, abbreviations, dimensions and project instructions.
Check dimensions. Compare information across drawings, specifications and the worksite.
Relate the plan to the site. Locate features such as services, contours, levels and datum points.
Determine carpentry requirements. Identify dimensions, tolerances, materials, finishes and processes.

CPC30220 Certificate III in Carpentry is a trade qualification for carpenters working in residential and commercial workplaces. Currently, the qualification requires 34 units of competency, consisting of 27 core units and 7 elective units.
The current course is delivered in a face-to-face mode at the SITS College over 54 weeks, including holidays for international students. There are no formal training package entry requirements for this qualification; however, there are provider admission requirements. Applicants need to: Be 18 years or over; have completed Australian Year 12 or equivalent; meet the stated English requirement of IELTS 6.0 or equivalent (unless an accepted exemption applies); and complete the required Language, Literacy and Numeracy assessment and pre-training review.
